Woodinville, Washington

In the summer of 1871, Ira Woodin and his family decided to pack up and move from their estate in Seattle, to an area just Northeast of Lake Washington along what was then known as the Squak slough.  There they set up a 160 acre homestead with a cattle and timber camp which would eventually become the hearthstone for the logging operations in the area.  The abundant natural resources drew workers from all over the state.  The Squak Slough, eventually renamed the Sammamish River, served as a highway system for the early settlers.  As a town began to grow around the Woodin’s cabin, it was only fitting that they name the area Woodinville.

As with many young cities in Western Washington, Woodinville eventually outgrew its timber industry roots and became largely a farming and dairy community.  One of the major dairy farms, Hollywood Farms, is now the site of the Chateau St Michelle winery.  The fertile soil and mild oceanic climate allow for excellent vineyard growth.  Winery’s began cropping up all over the hills of Woodinville and it is now considered to be one of the northwest’s premier wine destinations.

Woodinville real estate would remain mostly agricultural until the area began to grow post World War II.  With railroads and large companies moving to nearby cities, the large tracts of developable land would become very attractive for rural minded individuals who wanted nearby access to metropolitan areas.  As Woodinville’s nearest neighbor to the West, Bothel, began to grow in the early 90’s, there was talk of Woodinville being annexed into Bothel city limits.  Woodinville residents acted quickly to vote for incorporation and it was officially incorporated as the City of Woodinville into King County, Washington on March 31st, 1993.
