A Brief History of Sammamish

The Sammamish Plateau was part of unincorporated King County for most of its for most of its recorded history.  The Sammamish plateau remained a mostly rural area until suburban homes, shopping centers, and schools were built in the 1970s and 1980s.

The area surrounding Lake Sammamish has been, in recent times, the most rapidly growing suburban district in the Greater Seattle Metropolitan Area. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the cities of Redmond, Snoqualmie, Fall City, Issaquah and Bellevue have grown substantially. The town of Sammamish was incorporated into King County on August 31, 1999 because of suburban growth.  Sammamish annexed Klahanie on January 1, 2016, raising the population to about 61,000.

Moving to Sammamish, Washington

Why should I move to Sammamish?

The city of Sammamish sits just North of the Issaquah highlands nestled at the western foothills of the Cascade mountain range.  The beauty in the real estate surrounding Sammamish is breathtaking.  To the East there are sprawling views of the Cascades and to the West the waters of Lake Sammamish.  Year round greenery surrounds you as you relax in a moderate oceanic climate.  Quiet neighborhoods and a multitude of parks and beaches lend to this city’s relaxed atmosphere.

With Redmond nearby, home of Microsoft since the mid 1980’s, Sammamish has grown into a destination for upcoming techies looking to live close to the booming technology center while at the same time maintaining a level of suburban and almost rural community feel.  The Seattle and the Upper East Side areas are the tech capital of the Northwest, so you will find no shortage of opportunity for economic and personal opportunity nearby.

Sammamish is easily commutable by Eastside, Seattle, Everett and Tacoma workers.  Interstate 90 is just to the south for easy access to Bellevue and Seattle.  Highway 202 to the North will get you through Redmond and out to I-405.  While SR900 will lead you south through Issaquah to the South End.  SeaTac International Airport is about a thirty minute drive away.

The housing in Sammamish is widely varied from affordable and luxury, single family and condominiums, vintage and new, and everything in between.  There is something for everyone in Sammamish.  If you’re looking for a first time condominium, or your forever home, you can find it here.

What sort of fun things are there to do in Sammamish?

Whether its hiking and biking the trails at Merymoor Park, smelling the roses at the nearby Bellevue Botanical Gardens, heading up to see the falls in Snoqualmie, or just simply relaxing on the beach at Sammamish State Park, there are plenty of good old Northwest activities to make your life complete in Sammamish.  The City of Sammamish and Washington State parks in the area host concerts and plays in the park during the summer months as well.  There are walkable local shopping centers with a wide variety of cafés, diners, wine bars and pubs to enjoy and Crossroads Mall is nearby.

Did we mention that Lake Sammamish is the gorgeous eastern border of the city?  Marymoor Park lies at the lake’s North end and the East Lake Sammamish Trail in the south.  The lakeside homes are used to seeing waterskiers and wakeboarders pass by during the summer months.  There is even a public slalom course for waterskiing at the north end of the lake.  Lake Sammamish is a destination for many Eastsiders looking to relax at a beach side park with their friends and families.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, Sammamish is just an 45 minute drive from Snoqualmie Pass Ski and Recreation area and Stevens Pass isn’t too far off.  Mt. Rainier National Park is close by.  The Puget Sound is 30 minutes away and the Pacific Ocean isn’t much further.  The city of Sammamish hosts several festivals, markets and fairs that go on throughout the year.  There are several golf courses including The Golf Club at Newcastle that are close by.  Hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking, skiing, camping, boating, dining, shopping.  The list goes on and on!

What about Sammamish Schools and Education?

Sammamish is serviced by two school districts.  Lake Washington School District, which covers Kirkland, Redmond and the northern half of Sammamish.  The southern half of Sammamish is in the Issaquah School District.  Both districts are highly sought after by parents and are nationally recognized for their scholastic performance and extracurricular activities.   The schools in both districts consistently out perform their statewide competition which makes them among the top rated in the nation.

Sammamish is also located in close proximity to several colleges and universities.  The most notable of which is the University of Washington, which is approximately 19 miles away.  Bellevue Community College, Washington’s third largest higher learning institution, is just a 10 mile drive.

The k-12 and higher learning institutions in and around the City of Sammamish make Sammamish Real Estate some of the most family friendly in the Pacific Northwest.  Sammamish is a great choice for your family’s future.
