Kenmore by the lake
As the cities of Bothel and Woodinville were being built up, the heavily wooded real estate that would eventually become Kenmore was owned primarily by investors. The vast fir and cedar forests would eventually become the fodder for a shingle mill on the North end of Lake Washington owned by John McMasters. McMasters, who settled in the area in 1889, named the town of Kenmore in honor of his home town in Canada by the same name.
Kenmore has an interesting history. The town’s discrete and somewhat difficult to navigate location allowed speakeasy’s to operate successfully under the radar during prohibition. This made Kenmore a nightlife hotspot during Seattle’s Jazz Age which, of course, led to a booming alcohol industry that was far enough out for the Department of Revenue to largely ignore. The area retained its reputation as an archipelago of entertainment with night clubs, pubs, dance halls and restaurants well into the 40’s. It was a destination for many.
New roads were constructed which made travel into Kenmore much easier and the town was targeted by housing developers during the post-World War II era. Kenmore soon began to grow and become a bedroom community with an active freshwater port on the Northern shores of Lake Washington. Kenmore was eventually incorporated into King County on August 31st, 1998.
