Federal Way, WA - “Flag City, USA”

When talking about Federal Way, the conversation always heads in the direction of a common question.  “Why is it called Federal Way?”  Well, the area was settled originally as a logging camp.  It wasn’t actually called Federal Way until 1929, when Federal Way School District was conceived.  The name derived from Federal Highway U.S. 99, now SR99 or Pacific Highway South, which ran from Everett and Seattle to Tacoma.  Federal Way High School opened in 1930, and the local Chamber of Commerce adopted the name in the early 1950s.  The City of Federal Way was officially incorporated into King County on February 28, 1990.

Moving to Federal Way, Washington

Why should I move to Federal Way?

The City of Federal Way’s affordable land costs as well as proximity to major economic hubs such as Seattle and Tacoma allow for not just economic growth, but also quality of life opportunities unparalleled in the Puget Sound region.

Federal Way’s logging roots run deep.  Until 2014, Federal Way was home to Weyerhaeuser, the largest private owner of softwood timberland in the world. Weyerhaeuser has opened much of its land to the public, including two botanical gardens: the Rhododendron Species Foundation and Botanical Garden, and the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection.  Federal Way real estate is desirable for many businesses not only due to the area’s abundant natural resources, but also because it is close to two major international ports and centralized coastal real estate.  Federal Way is right in the middle of it all while maintaining a cozy bedroom feel.

The city of Federal Way is easily commutable by Eastside, Seattle, Everett and Tacoma workers.  Interstate 5 and a system of local highways as well as State Route 99 run through the city making it easy to get where you want to go.  Federal Way transit center offers a public transportation option for residents as well.  Sea-Tac airport is a short shuttle ride away.

The housing in Federal Way is widely varied from affordable and luxury, single family and condominiums, vintage and new, and everything in between.  Compared to the surrounding areas of Auburn, Lakeland, Seattle and Tacoma, the Federal Way housing market is relatively affordable.

What sort of fun things are there to do in Federal Way?

Remember earlier when we said Federal Way’s centralized real estate is highly desirable for many businesses?  Well, that’s also true for Federal Way’s 100,000 plus current residents.

The Federal Way Market opens every spring for fresh produce, vibrant flowers, local arts and crafts and there is even a master gardener on site to answer any questions you may have.  There is an abundance of fresh and locally sourced foods and entertainment.

If you’re looking for some family fun, Wild Waves and Enchanted Village, which is the largest water and theme park in the northwest, is within city limits.  Also, Westfield South Center Mall and shopping center is just a quick hop up I-5.  Federal Way Commons is Federal Way’s indoor shopping mall and is surrounded by a plethora of entertainment and dining options.

If you are an outdoor enthusiast, Federal Way has it all.  Just an hour and a half drive from Snoqualmie Pass Ski and Recreation area, or Crystal Mountain Ski Resort.  Mt. Rainier National Park is close by.  The Puget Sound is out your back door and the Pacific Ocean isn’t much further.  Federal Way hosts several festivals, markets and fairs that go on throughout the year.  There are several golf courses including Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club that are within city limits, or close by.  Federal Way has some of Washington’s most scenic beach parks and kayaking launches.  The city is also home to several mountain biking and hiking trails.  Hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking, skiing, camping, boating, dining, shopping.  The list goes on and on!

What about Federal Way Schools and Education?

Federal Way is a great location for future thinking families due to the city’s proximity to major universities and colleges as well.  The University of Washington, University of Puget Sound and Seattle Pacific University are all easily within driving distance.  Federal Way Public School District is home to 39 diverse and dynamic schools.  There are approximately 23,000 students and 2,500 staff members.  The four district high schools were all included in the Washington Post’s article naming the top 1,500 high schools in the nation.
