Enumclaw, WA - “Gateway to Mt. Rainier”
As with many of the early towns in the Pacific Northwest, Enumclaw was originally settled as a logging town. The natural resources in the area were well known to local native populations. The area where Enumclaw now resides was originally homesteaded in 1879 by Frank and Mary Stevenson and early settlers coined the town “Stevensonville”. However, later changed the name for a Salish word meaning “thundering noise” because of an event which happened at nearby Mount Enumclaw in 1895. In 1885, the Northern Pacific Railroad routed their transcontinental mainline through the site, accepting their offer of cleared, level land on which to build a siding. Confident that the area would grow, the Stevensons filed a plat with King County that same year. They built a hotel and gave away lots for a saloon and a general store. The city was officially incorporated into King County on January 27, 1913.
Since incorporation, Enumclaw has been mostly a farming and logging community. Enumclaw is situated at an elevation of 750 feet above sea level in a pastoral setting between plateau farmlands and the Cascade Mountains. The City of Enumclaw encompasses an area of 5.1 square miles. The surrounding plateau, with a population of more than 40,000, is one of the largest thoroughbred horse breeding and boarding areas in the United States. Enumclaw is a rare gem in the Northwest. Easily drivable to major economic hubs, while at the same time retaining that bucolic feel that so many people desire.
