Des Moines, WA - “The Waterland City”
Des Moines, Washington is a quiet, relaxing city located on the eastern shore of Puget Sound, midway between Seattle and Tacoma, Des Moines' history dates from about 1867. The City was named after the Des Moines City Improvement Company, which was the original development company that came to the area from Iowa in 1887.
The Duwamish and Muckleshoot Indian Tribes used to come to Des Moines following the spawning salmon down the many tributaries and also to comb the Puget Sound beaches for clams. Food and recreation were the main attractions in the 1920's and 1930's. Des Moines Beach Park and Salt Water Park were developed and have attracted many from around the area to enjoy the myriad of amazing views and relaxing beaches. During and after World War II, the population grew and businesses boomed, leading to formal incorporation as a City in 1959 and the eventual construction of a marina and pier which continues to attract year round visitors and seasonal residents.

If you’re looking for some family fun, Wild Waves and Enchanted Village, which is the largest water and theme park in the northwest, is close by. Also, Westfield South Center Mall and shopping center is just a quick hop up I-5.
If you’re looking for relaxation, just take a walk down to Redondo Beach. Yes, Des Moines has one too! It’s not as big as its California counterpart, but it is a relaxing treat nonetheless. Whether you're fishing on the dock or sitting on a log somewhere on the beach, nothing beats the serenity of being near the water.
If you are an outdoor enthusiast, Des Moines has it all. Just an hour and a half drive from Snoqualmie Pass Ski and Recreation area. The Puget Sound is right out your back door and the Pacific Ocean isn’t much further. Des Moines hosts several festivals, markets and fairs that go on throughout the year. There are several golf courses including Twin Lakes Golf and Country Club that are within city limits, or close by. Des Moines has some of Washington’s most scenic beach parks and kayaking launches. The city is also home to several mountain biking and hiking trails. Hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, kayaking, skiing, camping, boating, dining, shopping. The list goes on and on!
What about Des Moines Schools and Education?
Des Moines is a great location for future thinking families due to the city’s proximity to major universities and colleges as well. The University of Washington, University of Puget Sound and Seattle Pacific University are all easily within driving distance.
Most of Des Moines is within the Highline Public Schools district; the neighborhoods of Woodmont and Redondo are within the Federal Way School District. Highline Public School District is home to 39 diverse and dynamic schools. There are approximately 23,000 students and 2,500 staff members. The four district high schools were all included in the Washington Post’s article naming the top 1,500 high schools in the nation.
